Introducing the SIG's Strategic Plan

As announced at the end of 2016, the HALA Board has put together a strategic plan that will be presented to the community later this spring.

Because your engagement and input are extremely valuable, in the lead-up to the online webinar, we will be posting a series of stories to highlight aspects of the plan in more depth.

Our first piece gives you a look into the alumni and student community we serve based on data obtained from Harvard and surveys we conducted. We invite you to start thinking about the projects and activities you would like to see happen in 2017!

The Community We Serve: Latin American Alumni and Harvard Alumni in Latin America

According to the most recent figures released by Harvard, there were 5,961 Harvard alumni living in Latin America and the Caribbean, representing 10% of all Harvard alumni living abroad at the time. For the same period, there were 429 students from Latin America and the Caribbean across all Harvard schools, representing 9% of all international students at the university. Excluding Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean represent the third largest region of origin for students and the third most populated region with Harvard alumni.

While this corner of the world boasts 14 alumni country clubs, surveys carried out by the Harvard Alumni for Latin America SIG indicate a strong desire on behalf of alumni to explore their regional identity. This is likely because Harvard alumni are increasingly mobile and interconnected, as revealed in our 2013 and 2016 surveys. We know that:

  • 11% of alumni respondents identify with more than one country in the region

  • 47% do not live in the country with which they most strongly identify

  • 38% of alumni interested in Latin America and the Caribbean do not live in the region

  • 72% of alumni want activities that can connect them with alumni across the region

How about you? What brings you to the SIG and how can we serve our community better?
